Top 5 Signs That Your AC Needs Servicing

Nicolet Heating & Cooling • Feb 20, 2023

Most AC units have both indoor and outdoor sections. As a combined system, the indoor and outdoor units move hot air out of the home while venting cool air into the rooms. Over time, these systems require adjustments and repairs as necessary. Take a look at the top five signs that signal maintenance is needed.

1. Mysterious Outdoor Leak

Every AC unit is a closed system. No liquids should leak from the components unless it’s a designated pipe for natural condensation. If you notice a leak coming from the outdoor unit, contact technicians right away.

Generally, these leaks are caused by cracks in a refrigerant line. The liquid must be cleaned up and replaced by the professionals. If it continues to leak, it can damage both your yard and severely impair the system from operating at all.

2. Reduced Airflow

There are several parts that work together to force cooled air into your various rooms. If you notice that barely any air flows from the vents, technicians must look into the problem. Clogged filters, damaged fans, and the potential for a failed compressor are all suspect in this case.

3. Loud Noises

As the AC activates, the outdoor unit’s fan immediately rotates. If you notice a loud noise as the fan gains speed, turn off the system. Loud noises, such as grinding, banging, and associated sounds, often indicate that a part is either loose or broken.

Technicians must find the issue before the system can be used once again. These loose or broken parts can cause damage to other areas if allowed to continue.

4. Indoor Odors

Your AC unit should never have a foul odor. If your air filter gets dirty or the indoor unit is dusty, neither of these scenarios leads to strange scents.

Turn the system off and contact technicians when a smell arises. There may be an electrical short causing the odor. Allowing the odor to continue with an activated system can damage more parts. The odor may be noxious as well, so it’s a safe practice to let the professionals find the odor’s cause.

5. Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your AC seems to turn on and off in brief intervals. This sequencing isn’t normal. It should be checked by technicians because it points to several possible problems.

Electrical issues, compressor malfunctions, and many other faulty components may be the source. Troubleshooting the system as soon as you notice the problem can reduce additional damage to expensive parts.

Ideally, contact qualified technicians for your HVAC system at least once a year for routine maintenance. Avoid unexpected problems through preventative care.
