Five Ways to Reduce Heating Costs This Winter

Nicolet Heating & Cooling • Nov 21, 2022

Along with the inflation of groceries and other necessities, the cost of fuel and energy is on the rise. If you are not careful, you may see a considerable increase in your energy bill or have to pay significantly more for fuel to heat your home this winter. To ensure you do not break the bank, here are five ways to reduce your heating costs.

1. Seal All Cracks

To reduce heating costs, you must seal all the cracks in your home. Cracks can usually be found near windows and doors. They can also be found around pipes as well as in your attic. They allow heat to escape from your home and cold air to find its way inside. When heat escapes and cold air makes its way in, your furnace must work harder, thus increasing heating costs. Sealing all these gaps will ensure that the temperature in your home remains at a comfortable level.

2. Improve Your Home’s Insulation

Improving your home’s insulation is another way to prevent the cold from seeping in and heat from escaping. If your home is older, chances are that you will need to make improvements to its insulation. When your home is well insulated, your furnace will work less, allowing you to cut heating costs.

3. Set Your Furnace to a Lower Temperature

You may be tempted to run your furnace at a higher temperature so you do not feel so much as a slight chill; however, running your furnace at higher temperatures will jack up heating costs exponentially. Set the temperature to around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and wear layers of clothing if you still feel chilly.

4. Do Not Run Space Heaters

Space heaters are not only a safety hazard because they can catch fire, but they can also increase heating costs. To keep your home safe and lower your utility bill, avoid using them if at all possible.

5. Have Your Furnace Cleaned

Having your furnace cleaned is a great way to reduce heating costs. When your furnace is cleaned, it will not have to work as hard. Hire a licensed HVAC technician to clean out your ducts, change your filter, and clean the coils. You will then be good to go. Furnace cleaning ought to be part of your yearly HVAC maintenance plan.
